It is a great honour to write these words from within this magnificent historic edifice, which has witnessed profound and highly significant transformations. By this we mean the transition from the colonial school system to the national school system. The significance of this school stems from its illustrious national historical legacy, which has produced for us eminent figures and distinguished leaders in politics, culture, literature and education, such as Muhammad ibn Abi Chanab, who worked to preserve our heritage and safeguard the national memory, and Mohammad al-Charif Sahli, the writer and activist in the national movement, author of the famous works, & “The Resistance”, “The Letter of Jugurtha”, “Algeria Accuses” and “Liberating History from Colonialism”; and among its alumni are also the writer, author, and the distinguished journalist Kaddour Mahmoussadji, known for his book “Emir Abdelkader”; the activist Abdelhamid Mahri; and the female resistance fighter and writer Zohra Ounissi. These are just a few examples of many names to whom we shall return in a future instalment. The school was also renowned for its martyred teachers, who left the schools, cast aside their teaching robes and chose martyrdom over enslavement; among them were Mouloud Faroun, Ali Hamoutan, Habib Shahra, Wesley Dahman and Mohamed Jaafar Ben Boulnouar. This rich historical legacy was instrumental in creating a purely Algerian educational project that forms part of the national strategy, drawing on national expertise and educational programmes that balanced tradition and modernity, whilst preserving national identity whilst remaining open to others. Throughout its history, our school has strived to give students the warmest of welcomes, providing them with all available resources, surrounding them with experienced teachers, and ensuring that the administration supports them throughout their education in a manner befitting their development. One of the school’s strengths is that it has combined theoretical and practical elements in their educational training, equipping them with the knowledge and skills that will directly serve them in their work, whilst field placements have proved invaluable in enabling them to practise their profession to the highest standard. The college remains ever ready to welcome new students, and we promise them kind and effective support from the moment they join until the conclusion of their studies. The selection of the Higher School for Teachers – M’barak Al-Mili Bouzareah – by those with the highest academic averages, combined with serious and diligent academic guidance, will ensure that our beloved country raises its educational standards to achieve a developmental leap, for quality and distinguished education is the source of progress.
